BOOX Firmware V4.0: Discover New Features and Upgrades
We're excited to announce our latest firmware V4.0. Packed with features to make reading and note-taking more intuitive, this update aims to boost your productivity and spark your creativity. Let's take a closer look at it.
Smoother Reading: Customizable Themes and Smart OCR
In this update, the reading engine of our native app, NeoReader, has been upgraded to V3, enhancing both stability and compatibility.
To offer a more personalized experience for reflowable documents like EPUB and MOBI, NeoReader allows you to create different reading themes by adjusting font, margin, spacing, and background color. For academic and professional texts, opt for clean sans-serif fonts with moderate line spacing for clarity. For poetry or artistic works, elegant serif fonts, wider spacing, and generous margins bring a literary and airy feeling. These themes can be easily applied to other documents with one tap, saving time on repetitive setup.
Improvements have also been made to the fixed-layout format. When reading PDFs, OCR now runs in the background. You can choose online or offline recognition, the format, and the specific range, then minimize the window to a side-floating icon. This lets you continue turning pages, highlighting, and annotating without interruptions.
Notes Made Easier: Outlines, File-to-Notes, and Clickable PDF
If you frequently create multi-page notepads, now you’ve got an efficiency booster: Notes Outline. Simply long-press a page to set it as an outline entry, or organize further by adding sub-outlines in the Page Manager. This feature displays the structure of your notes on the side, allowing for easy navigation between entries. It helps you organize complex content logically, search more efficiently, and transform scattered ideas into cohesive plans for study or work.
Firmware V4.0 introduces file-based notes, allowing you to import files from local storage and create handwritten notes directly on them. Bring in your favorite PNG planners, habit trackers, or to-do lists for efficient time management. These PNGs will serve as templates for your notepad, and you can easily switch between templates in the "Page +" of the side toolbar. Additionally, you can import PDF documents—whether academic or work-related—to annotate and comment on. What's even more convenient is that hyperlinks within PDFs are fully clickable, allowing you to seamlessly integrate external content with your handwritten notes.
Creating notes has never been easier. Now, you can jump straight into the handwriting interface by double tapping "Create" in the Notes app, using the "Quick Note" in Control Center, or tapping the Floating Button on the widget. With fewer steps in the process, you can stay focused on recording the essential information as soon as inspiration hits.
Better Visual Clarity: Shapes, Canvas Resize, and Highlight
New graphics like coordinate systems, brackets, triangles, pyramids, and cubes are now available—perfect for math and physics learning or teaching. You can also tweak their size, line thickness, and color to use them in your creative projects.
Canvas resizing is now more intuitive with the addition of a preview window that shows the changes. You can double the width, double the height, expand fourfold, or manually adjust margins to optimize your layout while drawing or writing.
One of our five brushes, the marker, has been optimized. When used for highlighting, the marker now sits underneath the text as a background color, improving the layer separation and making the text stand out more for a better visual effect.
